Week 10 Progress

Our goals for this week were:

  • User Testing

    • Look into Playposit survey methods

    • Can test with the same children for the next round

  • Fabrication

    • Finalize circuit design for the pages

Fabrication

This week we've made a circuit for our phone pages, which involves a small piezo vibration motor that vibrates when the bee is pressed down. This is the circuit design that we will incorporate in related phone pages in our final book.

User Testing

We tested on two users this week: one a nine-year-old child named Thaddeus and one an elementary school teacher.

Thaddeus, like the other children we have tested on, seemed to really enjoy the circuit interactions in our book and find it more appealing than a regular pop-up book. This again indicates that we're on the track to make a project that children aged 8-10 will enjoy over regular popup books, as this represents a new kind of book that they've never seen before or doesn't currently exist to their knowledge.

Story

  • Were there any parts or words that you had trouble understanding?

    • No

  • What did you think of the story?

    • Enjoyed the story

  • What was the message of the story? Do you think Willie did the right things to convince Bucky to be his friend?

    • Yes

    • Be kind to others

    • Don’t be a bully

  • What would you do in Willie's place if someone like Bucky was being mean to you?

    • Tell my family

  • What do you think about Willie as a character? Is there anything you wish was different about him?

    • Nope

    • Loved Willie as the main character

Pop-ups

  • What do you think about the look of the characters? The objects?

    • “I like this is fun”

  • How do you like the layout of the pop-ups on the page?

    • Very fun. He loves the pop-ups.

  • Do you wish anything was different about the pop-ups?

    • The carrot tabs are hard to get back in once pushed up. Make the arrow tabs longer.

    • Put words for the story on the chalkboard for the classroom page.

Circuits

  • How easy was it to make the LEDs light up and make the phone buzz? Did you know what to do without instructions?

    • “I like how you press the bee and make the phone buzz.

    • “If a kid bought this it would be really surprising and fun”

  • How do you feel about interacting with the pages this way? Is there anything that you wish you could do with the page? (such as moving/changing objects or characters?)

    • Loves the interactions we already have.

  • Have you ever interacted with a book like this before? Would you like to have books like this?

    • Has not interacted with a book like ours before

  • Have you ever interacted with a circuit before now? What do you know about circuits? Does the popup interaction book make you want to learn more about circuits?

    • Has never played with circuits before, but after reading this book he would like to learn more.

Book Comparison

  • Which book style do you like best? Which book do you think you would enjoy reading the most?

    • “I like this one the best because it has a lot of things the other pop up book doesn’t have” (loves the interactions)

  • What did you like about the popups and interactions in the regular pop up book? Didn't like?

    • “I like how it shows different colors of the monsters”

    • Enjoys the motions and animations of the monsters.

The elementary school teacher reviewed our popups and commented on them:

From the perspective of a school teacher who knows about appropriate reading and learning materials, this feedback is very promising. Our project is good for bringing awareness to cyberbullying in children ages 8-10 and introducing them to circuit technology, and can be seen as valuable educative material to parents and teachers as well.
